Yes, customized solutions for bicycle parking facilities are part of Gronard’s core business. Depending on the project, bicycle racks, shelters, and urban furniture can be planned modularly and tailored precisely to the respective requirements, for example for bike-and-ride facilities, bicycle parking garages, residential developments, or commercial locations.
With the exclusive BWA modular system, Gronard offers a modular system that is unique on the market in this form. Gronard’s consulting team supports companies from the initial idea through planning to the appropriate implementation.
The Gronard catalog and technical documentation are available for download on the website. A free PDF guide is also available for subsidies for bicycle parking facilities. Architects and planners will find all relevant dimensions, material data, and installation instructions in the product documentation for reliable project planning.
The Gronard ordering process usually begins with an inquiry via the website, by phone at +49 (0) 89 890 855 40, by email at info@gronard.de, or through the B2B portal. This is followed by a consultation to clarify requirements, location, and product selection. The entire process is designed to guide municipalities, companies, and planners through the project as smoothly as possible.
Gronard’s company history dates back to 1949. The Munich-based company therefore has more than 75 years of experience in manufacturing bicycle racks, shelters, and urban furniture. Over this time, Gronard has developed and implemented proven solutions for municipalities, housing associations, companies, and public institutions. As an ADFC member with the largest number of ADFC-recommended bicycle racks on the market, Gronard is now one of the certified addresses for sustainable bicycle infrastructure in Germany. Most products are manufactured at the Munich site according to the “Made in Germany” principle.
Bicycle Racks
ADFC certification is an established quality seal issued by the German Cyclists’ Association (ADFC) and is based on DIN standard 79008. It assesses usability, durability, and theft protection, with a particular focus on urban use conditions. Certified bicycle racks must, among other things, be compatible with different tire widths, easy to use, and must not pose any risk of injury. Gronard offers more ADFC-recommended bicycle racks in its portfolio than any other manufacturer on the market, making it a reliable point of reference for municipalities, planners, and developers.
Bicycle racks do not necessarily have to be set in concrete. The choice of mounting method depends on the surface and the intended use. Common methods include anchor fixing with heavy-duty or chemical anchors in concrete or paved surfaces, as well as traditional concrete embedding for permanent outdoor installations. For temporary or flexible installation scenarios, mobile solutions without ground fixing are also available, for example with weighted bollards when no fixed mounting options are available. As part of our 360-degree service, we provide individual advice on the optimal mounting solution for your specific surface and location.
The required space depends on the selected installation variant, the bicycle orientation, and the configuration of the parking system. As a guideline, the parking depth depends on the bicycle length, approximately 1,900–2,000 mm, the parking angle, either 45° or 90°, and whether the system is arranged on one side or both sides. A double-sided front-wheel arrangement reduces the required parking depth. A minimum traffic aisle width of 1.80 m is recommended; for two-tier parking systems, a traffic aisle width of at least 2.10 m and a minimum parking height of 2.75 m are required. The spacing between bicycles varies depending on the model and requirements, ranging from 360 to 800 mm.
More information on planning bicycle parking facilities can be found in our guide.
E-bikes and cargo bikes place special demands on tire width, weight, and frame stability. Several Gronard models are explicitly designed for very wide tires: the Felix® and Kappa Neo support tire widths of up to 110 mm, making them suitable for cargo bikes and fat bikes as well. The Bike Lift (F401) is designed for tire widths of up to 80 mm, and a reinforced gas spring is available for heavier bicycles starting from 18 kg. For specific requirements, such as cargo bikes with a particularly wide wheelbase, low leaning hoops such as the Tasos Cargo are available for securely locking cargo bikes.
An expandable bicycle rack system is a crucial planning factor, especially for municipalities and companies with growing demand. During the development of our products, we have placed particular emphasis on modularity. This allows existing systems to be adapted easily to changing requirements without having to replace the entire installation.
With single-sided wheel positioning, bicycles are placed into the rack from one side only. This simplifies access but requires more space per parking spot. Double-sided wheel positioning uses both sides of a system and thereby doubles capacity with the same footprint, making it an efficient solution for locations with limited space. The choice between single-sided and double-sided wheel positioning depends on the spatial conditions, desired capacity, and user convenience.
Using bicycle racks as mobile units is useful wherever permanent anchoring is not possible or not desired, for example at events, on rented surfaces, or for temporary urban furniture applications. Many of our products can be installed without fixed permanent ground mounting, such as the Aris Modular. In addition, weighted bollards can be used with bicycle racks to ensure the necessary stability. We also offer the Parklet, a mobile piece of urban furniture that can be positioned flexibly. Mobile solutions are particularly suitable for municipalities that want to provide bicycle parking quickly and smoothly at changing locations.
In the development and production of its bicycle racks, Gronard follows DIN standard 79008 as the key guideline for bicycle parking facilities, as well as the ADFC guidelines, including historically the TR 6102-0911 guideline. Most products are manufactured in Germany. Steel is processed, among other things, by hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1461 and is also preserved, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and durability. Planning and manufacturing bicycle racks in compliance with standards is therefore not an additional promise, but an integral part of our production process since 1949.
Bicycle Shelters
The required dimensions of a bicycle shelter depend on the number of parking spaces, the type of bicycle rack, and the local conditions. As a guideline, Gronard recommends a traffic aisle width of at least 1.80 meters for the maneuvering area. For two-tier systems, at least 2.10 meters and a clear height of at least 2.75 meters are required. As part of its full-service approach, Gronard plans bicycle shelter dimensions on a site-specific basis, ensuring that all measurements are precisely tailored to the conditions at your location.
Yes, several of our shelter models are structurally designed for the integration of photovoltaic systems. These include, among others, products from the BWA® series, Alexia, Hera, and many more. Specific information on structural calculations or load limits for individual models is best clarified as part of a personal consultation, so that local conditions can be taken into account.
Yes, in many cases our bicycle shelters can be expanded retrospectively with additional modules. Whether and to what extent an expansion is possible depends on the existing system and the conditions on site.
In some cases, individual elements of the existing shelter may need to be adapted or replaced so that the expansion can be implemented properly from a technical perspective. Nevertheless, modular expansion is generally a cost-efficient alternative to constructing an entirely new bicycle shelter.
Whether a building permit is required for a bicycle shelter depends primarily on the relevant federal state, the size and construction type of the shelter, and the specific location. In many cases, smaller and simple bicycle shelters can be installed without a formal permit procedure, particularly if they are not positioned close to property boundaries and are not subject to special local requirements.
Even if no building application is required, provisions such as the development plan, setback areas, heritage protection, design statutes, or drainage requirements may still be relevant. For larger systems, attached structures, commercial use, or unclear property conditions, it is advisable to briefly consult the responsible municipality or building supervisory authority before installation.
Gronard offers bicycle shelters, two-tier parking systems, and e-bike charging infrastructure as coordinated product groups that can be combined as part of an integrated mobility concept. For charging infrastructure, options include charging cabinets as well as dedicated charging stations such as the LiON S, which are delivered ready for connection. For two-tier parking systems, we offer our shelters and closed shelters in an elevated version.
Yes, Gronard’s modular shelter systems are versatile and, depending on the design, can also be used as carports or to enclose recycling containers.
Many of our shelters are available in special variants for different usage requirements. If no suitable standard version is available, we can develop an individual solution tailored to the local conditions and the intended use.
